Wellington's local and frequent stop for misfits, musicians and lovers of fine food and liquor. A scene of assembly for Wellington's creative cognoscenti, the Matterhorn welcomes a multicoloured array
Setting the benchmark for the finest and freshest of New Zealand's music, dining, drink design and culture, Matterhorn gives it to you seven ways in seven days, indoors, outdoors, fireside; it is a regulars' restaurant, cocktail bar and day caf, where attitude is most certainly valued over attire.
Head-chef Sean Marshall presents a menu that is fresh and unpretentious, showcasing the best of our country(TM)s seasonal and artisan produce in a truly original fashion. This is supported by a pioneering wine list traversing old and new world styles and one of the most comprehensive selections of spirits and original cocktails in the world.
Also on rotation are some of the country(TM)s finest working musicians, a criminally talented band of gypsies mining the vein that is original music, while obsessive-compulsives dust off their most obscure and rare of vinyl collections.

Agree with all the comments but there is one small area of improvement. A few of the waiting staff give the impression that they are too cool for the job and need to remember how to give friendly service.

Recently had lunch here. Great service and atmosphere, although we had to wait a while to order. Food was fantastic, great blends of flavours, beautiful presentation. Meals were on the small side, you need to order sides. But quite reasonably priced for lunch.

absolutely stunning!!! went there the other night, the lamb and venison were absolutely beautiful (quite possibly the best lamb i've ever had!), and desserts were even better! 10/10 for me! great service too. :)

Probably my fave place to eat in Wellington. Great atmosphere, good service, extensive wine list with a few more unusual options, and the food is amazing.

What a dinign experience, sit and relax in the inoor/outdoor courtyard for a pre-dinner drink, then mosey into the cosy restaurant, and enjoy good food & fine wine. My recommendation....the fresh tuna is a melt in your mouth delight

If you’re in Wellington, you have to try this place. I’ve been here several times, always a special occasion. It’s a perfect place for date night. Or a lunch date.

Went here whilst my mum was over from the uk so was very glad it stood up (mostly) to her scrutteny and made us look good! No booking which was strange but also very cool so we waited at the bar, the guy said up to 40mins and bang on 40mins we got taken through. We were sat next to a very loud table but I'm sure this was only as the place was packed to the brim but still they could have shoved them up a corner somewhere. The food is of course incredible BUT very very very teeny tiny weeny weensy portions. My husbands monkfish was just ridiculously small....like 2 bites and gone. They really should recommend starters and most definately recommend to order sides as well...which I thought was bad service really. The puddings were also great but yep tiny. So all in all great place and I mean really really cool city slicker fab place to go great food, amazing tasting but way way too small a potions and god its bloody expensive!! Would certainly go there again but not on a regular basis due to value for money. Oh and also they threw my mums glasses in the bin....$800 christine dior ones!! which they admitted so I'm not over exagerating with the throwing them away!

I had eaten at Matterhorn for dinner before and was again returning to Wellington for business. I decided to take my clients to Matterhorn for a business lunch. Only to be presented with a bill for wine that was not ordered. The wine I had requested was on the prior page on the wine list at $70 per bottle, the wine that was provided was $130 per bottle. Upon questioning the waitstaff I was told that it was the customers responsibility to check the labels of the wine bottles. Even though I had pointed directly to the wine I requested on the page. The wait staff and the duty manager then decided to create a scene whilst I had my business colleagues at the table. This continued for 30 mins to the point the waitress threw a hissy fit and smashed the empty bottle of wine that she removed from the bin to show the different labels. What an experience, only to be told that I was at fault and no responsibility at the staff at Matterhorn. I have now shared my experience with many colleagues and the internet, this bar with its many awards soon is losing its lustre based on sheer arrogance and rudeness. NEVER AGAIN!!

Uber, uber cool and stylish. Words cannot adequately describe just how great Matterhorn is. Great food, service, drinks selection and I love the idea of being ushered to the bar until a table becomes free - very New York. If you can get there when one of our great kiwi bands are playing them you'll never leave.
