22nd July 2010 Went here after a family funeral up north so we all walked in somewhat sombre but the friendly and bubbly staff here and the amazing meals and atmosphere certainly cheered us up and was just what we all needed - it was a nice family moment shared at this great restaurant
23rd February 2013 It's a lovely oldely worldy bar and we went for there for dinner mainly because they have good size televisions and we wanted to watch the Chiefs game. Good friendly service (4/5) but food not great for the price. Food underseasoned and bland and my meat was uncooked (returned) and then pretty tough and hard to cut, let alone chew. Management were apologetic and gave us a price reduction (hence service 4/5). We decided not to bother with dessert. Shame really.

8th July 2011 This was the first time we ate at the Dickens Inn. We wanted a quick meal before going to see a show.
My meal sounded lovely (salmon and corn fritters) but was very dry. There was no sauce accompanying the meal and I asked for some mayonnaise on the side, which I was told I would be charged a dollar for. I am happy to pay, but feel that they are penny pinching by doing this, especially when I explained that my meal was dry. The mayonnaise was out of a jar. The meal had potential to be lovely, but the fritters were old and dry.
We wanted to pay with two credit cards and were told that the system couldn't handle this......another staff member came along and processed the transaction with the two cards and scoffed at the staff member who had said we couldn't do it. Not professional at all.
All in all disappointing for such a well located establishment.

7th October 2010 The food was good though small for the price - particularly compared to Monteiths Bars in other parts of the country.
The real problem is the lack of any customer service focus. Ordered a steak with oysters and arrived with prawns. I asked the first waitress to change it and she took the meal away at which point another waitress came over and told me that I ordered prawns. From there bad customer service got worse and all we got was attitude everytime they came to the table.

3rd July 2010 I have been to Dickens Inn a number of times and the last two times swore never to return due to the ridiculously priced meals. Last night (5pm) I went with my partner and two children aged 11 months and 2 years. The waitress was very friendly, helpful and accomodating. The chef agreed to prepare an omelette for us which was on the lunch menu but not the dinner menu. No water was brought to the table. I had a vodka and tonic and my partner had a beer, each costing $8.50. My omelette ended up costing me $17.50. It was nice enough but really, $17.50!!?? My son had the kids fish meal which cost $12.00. All up our bill was $60.00. Totally overpriced for the quality of food and the setting. It's just a bar with eating area, not a top class restaurant. Very disappointed. This time we won't forget and won't return.
