29th October 2008 Waihi College is situated at the confluence of the Waikato, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty districts and as such enjoys the benefits that these areas provide. The school is built on the old site of the Waihi Golf Course, and as such enjoys magnificent grounds. The Kaimai and Coromandel ranges form part of the outdoor education programme, which includes kayaking on the Whanganui River, skiing on the central North Island mountains and survival skills. The school has an excellent coverage of all aspects of the curriculum with special strengths in the Arts and Drama, and in a full range of sports where teams regularly perform at the top of their competition locally and nationally. It has its own farm unit where commercial kiwifruit are grown, native trees produced, calves are reared and vegetable gardens tended. Students are involved in scientific trials with the New Zealand Kiwifruit Authority and the Soil Conservation Department. The local beach is excellent for surfing and fishing and has a strong surf-lifesaving organisation.
