23 years ago, Grant Wilson retired from the N.Z. Navy and he and his wife Karen moved to Maketu to work with Grant's parents who operated the General Store. Unable to source a good quality pie for the store, Grant's mother had recently begun baking her own pies to sell. Grant started trying out ideas and experimenting with recipes.
Over the next few years Grant and Karen quietly worked away perfecting the pastry and recipes that were fast gaining a reputation in the Bay of Plenty and beyond. Eventually the store was closed and they turned their attention entirely to pie making.
Now Karen and Grant employ a staff of 40 plus and every week distribute tens of thousands of pies all over the North Island, from Kaitaia to Wellington. There have been many changes at Maketu Pies over the years, but the pies have remained the same; tried and true recipes, made without compromise from quality ingredients.
