Specialising in donburi, and among the first to introduce the concept to New Zealand.
Specialising in donburi, and among the first to introduce the concept to New Zealand. Donburi is basically a large bowl of rice topped with a mixture of cooked as well as fresh vegetables, and meat or fish " in a surprising, and delicious, number of variations.
This is hearty and healthy fare.
The team at Renkon prepare all of the ingredients, including any sauces, fresh, and take special care in selecting the oils used in the meals : olive oil, canola, and sesame.
Donburi is also an eminently sensible idea, since it manages to combine your whole meal into one dish, and does so in both a colourful and an appetizing combination of the ingredients. Quick, cheap, unpretentious, nutritious and well-balanced. These traditional ways of sustenance are streets ahead of fancy-schmancy ideas like building your own sandwich " or burgers!

I am amazed no one has come to review this lovely Japanese restaurant yet! It always satisfies my tasting buds and is very healthy for our diet. The portion may be a bit small than the others but that means you get the chance to try out their appealing sides. Would still pop in for lunch or dinner from now and then.

Great japanese restaurant to either dine in or take away. Friendly service and the food is great and extremely cheap - around $10.50 for a main. One of the best Japanese restaurants in Auckland.

My partner and I love to go here. the food is fresh and delicious - both the sushi and the plate meals. Service is great and reasonably quick even at busy times. Would recommend getting takeaway, however, as the restaurant itself is quite small and a bit cramped.

I'm not sure what it is that makes me to come back to Renkon again and again. Maybe it's the Chicken Karaage (Japanese fried chicken) with that delicious mayo, or it could be the tender yet crispy Agedashi tofu. It could also be the Kumara Tempura, but I think it's a combination of all of the menu as well as the great service. Highly recommended especially with it's price (considering the location as well).

I come to this restaurant quite a bit for lunch as I work in the area. The food is always delicious and arrives promptly. I have the Chicken Kura, which is fried chicken in a tomato based sauce. You have the choice of rice or noodles to go with it. I also recommend the kumara, which is fried in a light batter, also delicious. Perfect for a quick bite on a budget.

I'm addicted to Renkon. Sometimes I get it 3 times a week. I usually get it to takeaway and have to sneak it back inside the house without anyone seeing. My fix comes in a plain white box and using the disposable wooden chopsticks is like digging for treasure to find the delectable nuggets of Karaage chicken within the fresh vegetables and white rice. A single lemon wedge gives it an extra zing. The strange thing is that I never feel guilty after consuming my meal, not like a certain brand of fried chicken which I have a love/hate relationship with. I actually feel like I've eaten something healthy. In fact I'm sure it is! I highly recommend Renkon as a cheap, great tasting meal option, either eating in or takeaway - its casual Japanese dining at its best.

Perfect for a cheap and cheerful meal. Easy to have a good meal for two for around $20. Can't go wrong visiting this place for a quick meal.

It's budget alright, but it's tasty with it. Who ever thought eating in Parnell would be so cheap. If you're in the mood for the perfect Japanese and you want your food in a hurry, then head to Renkon.

This is a fantastic place to stop in for good food on a budget. You can eat well for two including drinks for about $25 which in Auckland, is pretty outstanding. The food is always fresh and tasty and I always love the edamame!!
