Silicon Sponge
Attributes
Silicon Sponge is manufactured from natural New Zealand pumice, a volcanic aluminium silicate. The modification process is completely natural and includes high temperature sterilisation. The media can be manufactured in a range of sizes to suit different applications.
It is an excellent filtration media with an irregular surface texture and an effective surface of approximately 10 square metres per gram. the surface is negatively charged which assists in retaining floc material.
The high floc retention results in lower residuals for aluminium, iron and manganese and delay turbidity breakthrough when compared with anthracite by up to 100%.
Silicon Sponge is hard wearing with independent tests indicating abrasion properties four times better than anthracite.
The specific gravity of 1.2 allows separation from other filter media layers and provides excellent fluidisation during backwash. This enables effective cleaning of the filter with lower backwash water requirements.
Uses
Silicon Sponge has been very effective in partially replacing the top sand layer of a filter. This improves filter run times, filtered water quality, and reduced floc carry over. This filter media is ideal for use in Porous Ceramic Dual Media filter. The PCDM filter eliminates the need for support gravels, double filter run times and flow rates, and use the properties of Silicon Sponge to their best advantage. Silicon Sponge is suitable for use in both pressure and gravity filtration systems.
The material has been used for more than 10 years in Municipal applications. It is also used extensively in food and drink processing plants to treat raw water for consumption and waste water for recycling or discharge.
