Central Regional Health School

The Central Regional Health School was established at the beginning of 2000 as part of the Special Education 2000 policy to provide education for students with high health needs. It is one of three regional health schools - there is another in the Northern North Island and another for the South Island.

CRHS provides education programmes to students who are unable to attend School as a result of their high health needs.

Students who are admitted to CRHS as a result of their health condition are normally taught in hospital or at their home. Their individual programme is based on the programme from their regular school. CRHS aims to ensure that when students return to school, after an illness, they have made at least as good as progress as their classmates.

Students are admitted to the roll because they cannot attend school: not because they have a particular condition or illness. Sometimes students with quite severe conditions can still attend school for part of a day. This is good as it allows them to maintain friendships and the connection to the school. Others will be not so fortunate and will have all of their programme delivered by the CRHS teacher.

We support secondary students to transition back to their regular school, further education or employment. Students will be currently enrolled with a regular school and working with a mental health team. CRHS-City staff include teachers and health workers.
