After 28 years practising orthotics at Napier Hospital, Carl Svendsen has spread his wings. For the past 10 years he has been running two businesses from his Symons Lane premises through which he manufacturers and gives advice on orthotics, and Boots and Awl, the footwear and leather repair side of the business.
"Orthotics involves making aids to support the body from the foot to the head". "Clients are referred by orthopaedic surgeons and GPs, but they can come in off the street for the various aids we stock."
Aids for people with permanent or temporary disabilities caused through accident or sports injury include compression stockings, walking sticks, toilet raisers, easy reach pick-up tongs and peelers for arthritics.
Carl undertakes footwear and leather repairs, as well as stocking shoe-care products such as renovating polishes, leather dyes and leather preservers. "The repairs can be from a small stitching job on footwear to a full sole and heel. I also repair a range of articles including suitcases, backpacks and golf bags."
