NEWS FLASH
Commissioning of the two new Class 3 storage tanks is all but
complete at BST’s Mt Maunganui Terminal. The tanks add a total
of 2,220 m3 of storage to the Class 3 capacity at the site and will
both be full, in early March.
Supporting these tanks is a purpose built Class 3 road tankerloading area. The loading area allows for all weather “bottomloading” with “Scully over–fill” protection, compatible with fuel companies modern fleet of road tankers. The commissioning of the tanks is the culmination of 9 months of
project work. URS were the project managers of this
construction. Both tanks were built in sections off-site by Page &
Macrae Engineering. As they were completed they were
transported to the terminal and swung into position by crane.
This allowed for a quick construction time unhampered by
weather. Mt Engineering coupled all of the pipework together to
get the tanks complete - on time - for their first consignments.
Class 8 Storage Tanks
The Class 8 storage tank project has run in parallel to the Class
III tank project in the Mt Maunganui Terminal. It has meant for
a busy time on this site.
In order that all safety, health and environmental areas have
been covered an extra staff member has been employed to look
after work permitting on the site. This allows for the operational
staff to focus on keeping the terminal running, with the clear
knowledge that there is no compromise on the integrity of the
sites operations.
The Class 8 project has increased this storage area’s capacity by
2,000 m3. It will be used for the storage of Class 8 – Alkali’s.
These tanks will be commissioned in June for use in the 2009-10
dairy season.
A bonus for the site over the two projects has been an upgrade of the terminals fire system.
The fire system boasts a 200 kW booster pump and twin feeds from the two fire mains on the street. Three fire monitors – effectively high powered water/foam cannons – have
also been strategically placed around the site. According to the local fire brigade this system is one of the best in the port of Tauranga.
