6th September 2012 Purchased a supply of Jersey Giant Asparagus crowns labelled as coming from Fiesta Flower Bulbs. No company name, address, phone number or email shown. Not good - needs attending to. It took a little time on the internet to find this was a business name for a division of Spingfield. Product looked OK though significant variation in crown size (but not in spread diameter). Instructions were totally contradictory: on back flap were instructions re planting time, depth and sun exposure - no problems with any of those - but spacing was shown as 15 - 20 cm. On the back of the main part of the label were cultural notes which seemed quite comprehensive until it came to spacing; 45 cm apart in rows 60 - 80 cm apart! Irreconcilable with what was on the back flap and on which I had based the number of crowns purchased. The lack of contact details and impeding bad weather meant I had to get the plants in, there was no time to search for contact details to enquire which was the correct spacing. I opted for the closer spacing. Some days later I traced the business name to Springfield and spoke to a young fellow there who pleasantly told me the wider spacing was the correct one! Labelling quality control called for. It will be a couple of years before product quality is truly apparent so first impression has to be from the label.
