Kaiapoi Golf Club is situated just 15 to 20mins north of Christchurch and offers quality golf with the country hospitality. We are on the Canterbury Golf Trail and the course of 18 holes will test many golfers with terrain from flat to undulating with many established trees, 24 bunkers, uneven greens and requires accurate shot placement.
Our course is well groomed under the watchful eye of Contractor, Peter Commons of Turf Contracting & Renovations,
Facelift for Kaiapoi Golf Course
The Kaiapoi Golf Course is getting a significant makeover in its 103rd year.
About 500 trees are being removed this month from various parts of the course. These are mostly very old radiata pines, along with a few large oaks, eucalypts and poplars.
Bob Bradley, says for the last 10 to 20 years these large trees, the pines particularly, have increasingly been causing problems for golfers. Some are more than 80 years old " the trees I mean, but some of our golfers are also over 80! Large trees spread branches and roots across fairways, shade the turf, steal water and nutrients applied to turf by the greenkeeper, and drop debris on the playing surface. It was a case of when, not if, we confront these issues. Late last year the club members decided after quite a lot of discussion that we should remove all the problem trees in one fell swoop. So we are making a big change in a short time to how the course looks and plays.
A professional forestry crew will take about a month to fell the trees and remove marketable wood, which will be sold into various export and domestic markets. The course is open for play 7 days a week. Club Secretary Manager Neville Lyons says now is a perfect time for interested locals to enquire about joining. Our subscription year starts on March 1 with pro-rata rates available on club web site and new members are always welcome.
