The Christchurch City Council has an area of 45226 hectares under its jurisdiction and has a population of some 324,900 people. The Council comprises 24 elected councillors plus the mayor. There are also six elected community boards, each having nine members, three of these being appointed city councillors. Services provided include rubbish disposal, recycling, water supply, streets, sewerage, land drainage and housing.
