14th December 2014 I enlisted Grant to recover my Kovacs couch in Nov 2014. He came across as passionate and knowledgable and certainly had a great workshop.
He quoted me $800-$1000 to do the work, depending on the amount of foam/felt he would have to use (thats excluding the cost of the fabric, which was $900). The bill for reupholstery work came in at $1400. When I questioned the price and directed him to his quote he told me that the $800-$1000 (which I had in writing in an email), was excluding GST?! and excluding the cost of the materials?!. I was not happy and explained I had been on a budget. I offered $1100 max. He said he agreed that there may have been a 'misunderstanding' and offered to come down to $1250. In the end we settled on $1200, but I am still angry that I had to pay $200 more than his top quote. He did not handle this well and called me hostile, informing me I was not to come onto his property. After the experience to date I wanted to view the couch before paying him, but he told me I had to send my husband to do this?!
The whole experience was really stressful, and I honestly think that Grant is a rip off merchant. Gives you a price, but then doesn't stick to it, and well, what are you going to do? I had paid $900 for the material already, so he had me over a barrel. I had no choice but to pay.
In terms of the work, the couch should be looking like a brand new off the shelf couch, but it doesn't. It looks nice, but looks like a recovered couch. The foam on the backing pillows is lumpy, and the curvature around the top of the pillows is more square on one side than the other. I look at my couch and I'm gutted that I've paid $2100 for a secondhand sofa.
I wouldn't recommend Altered Images to anyone. The only plus side was he finished the job in a week, hence the 1/2 star rating.
Written quotes mean nothing when they have your furniture. Don't engage Grant, quote or no quote. Go to a reputable firm, someone who will respond in a meaningful and businesslike manner if there is an issue.
