Located opposite Western Park in Ponsonby Road, Cafe Byzantium has been a fixture of the Ponsonby cafe scene for a number of years.
It is licensed and serves a range of sandwiches and cabinet food, including vegetarian options. Sanwiches are priced at $10 on average.
Byzantium is child friendly and provides a courtyard for customers to the rear of the cafe. Byzantium seats approximately 50 people and is wheelchair accessible.
Its opening hours are 7:00am to 4:00pm Monday to Friday and 8:00am to 4:00pm Saturday and Sunday.
27th October 2007 I went to Byzantium Cafe last Sunday for breakfast to catch up with a girlfriend I hadn't seen in ages. We had been before for lunch and quite enjoyed it.
Its a cute pokey little cafe and the staff are nice enough.
Anyway I ordered a ham and tomato omlette... now I always thought an omlette was a relatively hard thing to stuff up. Boy was I wrong!!! It was the worst omlette I've ever had eating out - I could have made one better!
It was runny and filled with slightly cooked onion with cubes of that ham you find on cheap pizzas. Basically it was a round circle of yellow mush on my plate!!! I attempted to eat it because I am one of those people who think it can't be as bad as it looks and didn't have the heart to ask for it to be taken back!
In hindsight it would've been worth sending it back for their sake too. It has put me off omlettes and definitely put me off this cafe!
