Auckland Zoo is home to the largest collection of native and exotic animals in New Zealand, set in 17 hectares of lush parkland and just five minutes from central Auckland.
1st October 2015 Auckland zoo is absolutely incredible. I have a three year old son and after a couple of visits last year I ended up purchasing an annual pass. So far this year we've been four times which just makes it so convenient to drop in and take our time knowing that we can come back if we don't see everything on that day. The zoo is well kept and the animals appear well looked after. There is plenty of opportunity for children to learn about animals and to have some interactions. There's plenty of daily "shows" also, such as the lions and tigers getting fed. My son also loved to feed the giraffes. Whilst there is a fair bit of construction going on to enhance the zoo at the moment, Auckland Zoo has done a great deal to communicate what is happening and why. For example, the flat lands (where the giraffes are) is getting quite an overhaul, they are doing this to pull the platform that you walk around to be lower on the ground which will give you a better sense of the height of the giraffes. I think this is a great idea!
I can't recommend enough a trip to the zoo if you are a tourist. If you are a local, especially if you have children, consider the year pass, I find it great value for time with my son.
