Terry Peabody and his family searched for ten years to find the place and the people that could fulfil a dream " that they could make some of the best wine in the world.
It was this notion of legacy " to create something greater than the here and now " that led Terry Peabody in 1997 to Steve Smith and to the development of Craggy Range. Together they set a plan to buy the best vineyard land, select parcels of grapes grown by the country's best farmers, and to choose a place for their homes, cellars and country restaurant.
Their aim was to make single-vineyard wines " wines that are true expressions of the vineyard's terroir. And an ambition to make the greatest wines in the land. No small goal and one that is not achieved without considerable effort.
To many terroir is an elusive and romantic French term, frequently used to describe the inherent characters of soil, climate and culture, as reflected in a wine or the food from a particular vineyard or region. At Craggy Range the restaurant is called Terroir - its name reflecting that its food, the vineyard's wine and its culture, come together sublimely, in a unique and dramatic setting.
Cond Nast Traveller described the Terrior restaurant as oea meal as close as you can get to perfection and in 2009 it received one of New Zealand's highest restaurant accolades winning the Winery Restaurant of the Year category.
Terrior - where your roast chicken is spit-turned in front of you on a roaring wood fire, and the grilled figs were picked one hour before, all served alongside the perfectly matched single vineyard wines of Craggy Range.

29th November 2010 It was a fantastic lunch we had there but it does try a little hard - a lot of the dishes on the menu were half in French and for those who weren't very clued up on French it was a little confusing. The meals themselves were well presented and tasted great. It is quite pricey but worth it for a treat. There aren't many choices on the menu but everything has a wine match to make things easier when choosing a wine to match the meal. One of the waiters is quite hard to understand and he even muddled our order but i did end up eating an entree we didn't have to pay for and it was fantastic. I do recommend giving it a go because your view of the restaurant could be different to mine and the views are fantastic.

11th September 2010 Havelock North is spoilt for choice by the variety of restaurants on offer and anywhere else in the country this place would be something special. Unfortunately, it tries too hard to be something it isn't and takes risks with its menu that offsets the obvious amount of effort that goes into its preparation. The winelist variety is upsetting as they try to push their own wines. Good service and great outdoor dining with the obvious views towards the Peak.
One of the few places that charges for winetasting unless you buy a bottle, unlike the more established and esteemed wineries nearby.
