13th July 2014 The first time a visited the North Sea Village restaurant was around 4 years ago and the experience was great. The yum cha was very good. Unfortunately every time I have been there since the experience has been worse every time. The service is terrible if you aren't Chinese. From the minute you get there you will feel like a second class citizen as you watch group after group of what appear to be wealthy Chinese being seated at tables in front of you, while you wait for 45 minutes even though you made a reservation. They favour the Chinese groups because they think they can make more money from them. The staff that work there are the worst type of Chinese. They are inconsiderate and generally unfriendly. Recently the food has been deteriorating in quality. Don't order anything that is deep fried because it comes out so drenched in oil that it tastes like a soggy piece of bread. The prawn toast is so oily that it left puddles of oil on our plates. Despite the terrible experiences, I stupidly think that maybe they've improved or hired some better more friendly staff and go and waste my money there, but it only gets worse. If you want to try yum cha go to the Asian Wok in Browns Bay, or the Grand Harbour in Auckland CBD. They are so much better restaurants.
One of my regular yum char places...The yum chars are fresh and tasty with excellent variety. Service can be better though. =)
