After training as a doctor (MB ChB Otago) and as an orthopaedic surgeon (FRACS Orth 2007) in New Zealand, I travelled overseas with my family for 2 years of international fellowship in Surgery of the Spine. In Australia I practised at the Royal North Shore Hospital and the Westmead Children's Hospital in Sydney for six months each, and subsequently I spent 12 months in London, England at the internationally renowned Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital at Stanmore. In both Australia and the UK I worked with leading surgeons in all areas of surgery of the spinal column.
I have now returned home to Auckland, where I have been working as a Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon at Starship Children's Hospital since March 2010, and since May 2010 as a private Specialist Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon at Ascot Central - a purpose built, state of the art medical consulting facility next door to Ascot Hospital.
My training has covered all areas of Spinal Surgery in adults and in children, and because of the highly specialised nature of Spinal Surgery, I now confine my specialist orthopaedic practice to the surgical and non-surgical management of all conditions of the spine. In this way I am able to devote all my energy to maintaining the highest standards in my treatment of the spine.
My particular areas of interest are lumbar disc and degenerative disease (including stenosis and instability), cervical disc disease and cervical stenosis (with or without myelopathy), and paediatric and adult spinal deformity, including spondylolisthesis, kyphosis and scoliosis. I am experienced in anterior and posterior approaches to all levels of the spine, and in complex techniques such as spinal osteotomy, vertebral column resection, and the treatment of high grade spondylolisthesis. I am pleased to be able to offer patients surgery at both Mercy and Ascot Hospitals.
