Taupo Museum is a vibrant museum containing Maori treasures and a wide selection of exhibits related to fishing, the timber industry and the volcanic geology of the Lake Taupo region.
There is a large art gallery with changing exhibitions of contemporary New Zealand art on display which is often for sale.
A unique New Zealand garden capturing the essence of the central North Island called 'Ora - Garden of Wellbeing' is a fantastic addition to the museum. This is the gold medal-winning garden (Chelsea Flower Show 2004) and includes steaming silica terraces made in the Weta Workshop and a native birdsong soundtrack.
Join a one-hour heritage walk from the museum to the Taupo boat harbour taking in points of interest on the historic Tongariro Domain - every Sunday at 2pm, weather permitting. Free with museum entry. The museum shop has a wide array of Taupo and New Zealand gifts.
Visit Taupo Museum for a unique blend of heritage and culture celebrating the Taupo region.
Museum entry (includes Ora Garden): Adults: $5; Senior Citizens and Students: $3; Children (school age and under): free; Taupo District residents: free with ID. Open daily from 10am to 4.30pm (closed Good Friday and Christmas Day).
