In Auckland and Wellington the society screens opera films and presents recitals and concerts for New Zealand singers, both professional and those beginning their professional careers.
The New Zealand Opera Society was founded in 1953 to support the newly established New Zealand Opera Company. That company vanished in 1971, but the society has continued to support opera wherever it has reappeared. It encourages interest in opera from the national perspective which is largely through the monthly magazine, New Zealand Opera News
