The Flying Fox offers retreat accommodation and canoe journeys based in the Whanganui National park.
Self-contained hand-built guest cottages overlook the Whanganui River and sit amidst organic gardens and orchards of heritage fruit trees.
The legacy of earlier generations of both Maori and European remain here and provide an opportunity for guests to gain a deeper appreciation of the significance of the area to local maori and an understanding of the endeavours of the first European pioneers to tame this untouched wilderness.
Hosts Annette and John are locals who combine kiwi ingenuity with a wider appreciation of the need for sensible and practical use of the resources of the area in which they operate to offer a place for guests which is based on sound environmental and cultural values.
Guests do not go without the comforts of home, the cottages are fully furnished and equipped with music, books etc, all designed to assist the rediscovery of the simple pleasures of life.
