Hi everyone, I am programme leader of a 48week course called NZDefence Force Preparation Programme based in Manukau City. The course is for 16-18yr olds who have aspirations of joining the Military; so we provide theory and practical knowledge to help in their goal achievement. On this programme students are rewarded at each combined 20credit total NCEA Levels 1 and 2 e.g. at 20credits they get to attend driving lessons, 40credits earns them 10days Veteran duty, 60credits earns them 10weeks boxing lessons at Vilis Gym. This review is not about my programme but Vilis Boxing Gym and the service they provide. Reader you may think that 10weeks of boxing lessons is not much, but you first need to realise our students have to run 8km to get to the gym for their lessons, then spend 1 hour boxing before running return 8km back to base. Far from seeing the 16km run as a punishment, student evaluations confirm time at Vilis Gym has been productive, constructive, a programme highlight, enjoyable and well worth it. So much so that thanks to student feedback - we wish to continue having Vilis Gym on our programme in the year 2009. Note: we have used their services since 2006! Osifa Vili and staff at Vilis BoxingGym have helped develop, provide aims and aspirations to Youth, their lessons are more than about boxing lessons, they teach holistically - commitment, attitude, respect and humility.
