Scott is a great bass tutor, who's always professional and well prepared for lessons. I had been self teaching myself the bass for about 5 years prior but felt my ability was not progressing and got stuck in terms of how to improve. Within the first year Pro Bass Lessons I saw a massive improvement. Scott's a very talented musician with a broad range that suited any style I wanted to learn. Highly recommended

A few years ago I was stuck in a rut with my bass playing, finding progress slow and tedious. I was skeptical about getting bass lessons however, as I already had a Bachelor of Music under my belt and thought that anything I needed to learn I could teach myself. Now I regret not getting lessons from him sooner... I began getting lessons with Scott and was instantly blown away by his professionalism, the individualised content of his lessons, the depth of his knowledge and his passion for music. My progress skyrocketed as his structured lessons gave me the direction that I lacked, his experience highlighted areas for improvement I hadn't even considered and his vast knowledge enhanced my skills as a live bass player, a recording artist, composer and improviser. Anyone, from a beginner to an experienced bass player, would benefit hugely from having Scott as their teacher.

When you're learning to play the bass, you don't just need to find a great bass player, you need to find a great bass teacher, and that's exactly what you'll find in Scott Sutherland. Scott takes a very structured, methodical approach to the learning process, building on each skill in a really seamless way. I started lessons with Scott as a total newbie, feeling rather nervous that I had never played an instrument or studied music before. Scott's genuinely warm and engaging manner put me instantly at ease. In a short space of time, Scott taught me how to read music, and built my skill level up to the point where I could master much more difficult pieces than I ever thought would be possible. Whenever I felt that I'd hit a wall, either with motivation or technical ability, Scott's reassurance and enthusiasm got me right back on track and over each hurdle. I particularly liked the way that Scott would find homework songs for me to learn that fitted exactly with my musical taste; nothing puts a fire in your belly like wanting to master a song you love! Whether you're brand new to the bass, or a seasoned player looking to build on your existing skill set, you will benefit hugely from taking lessons with Scott. I can't recommend him highly enough; he is a brilliant teacher! Sign up for lessons with a true master and you'll never look back!

I've just read the other reviews for the first time and can see that Scott delivers the same great teaching to everyone as they have covered most of what I would have said, and I can concur with it all. I decided to learn bass at age 48 having only had a short period of guitar lessons in my early teens. They were everything music lessons shouldn't be in that while covering the theory and practice they were uninspiring and not enjoyable and I see now put me off for a long time. Scott, while covering all those things, is the opposite, exuding expertise but completely friendly and approachable. His ability to customise and pace the material to suit my tastes, progress and goals was amazing and his ability to find what those were and tune into them meant he really "clicked" with me - something others seem to also experience. When I was struggling his lessons would re-inspire me. Scott is a great teacher, extremely professional and I have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone looking to learn or develop with the bass guitar.

I was a student of Scott's for 5 years and thanks to him I went from being a complete beginner to successfully getting into the Auckland University Jazz course. I always looked forward to each lesson and I have found that the solid technique and theory he taught me, has helped a lot in my current course. The wide repertoire of songs we covered (from all genres) made each lesson more enjoyable and helped me to implement new ideas/techniques - this also encourages you to play more frequently which has been very important. I will be eternally grateful for the skills I have learnt from Scott and I highly recommend him as a teacher.

Learning an instrument in the 30s is not easy. It is hard to find time to go to lessons when working full time and have two kids. Scott has been very flexible and always tried to accomodate my irregular lesson times. The material he provides is well balanced (theory + techniques) and always include a few songs for practice (even the after the first lesson!). And he always tries to find songs/music that the student is interested. There were times where I didn't have the motivation to practice, but my motivation always came back after taking a lesson with Scott. Highly recommended.

I moved to NZ last year and was looking for a teacher whilst there. I can't sing Scott's praises highly enough- I enjoyed every lesson, he motivated me and he even gave me cool songs for homework which I thought I'd never be able to play... The best thing about his teaching is that it's very easy for him to take a concept that you're finding difficult and put it another way or demonstrate it so that you do finally get it. He's also very clear and the way he structures things gives you some hope that you will (one day) get there! Very impressed and would recommend to anyone.

My family have been learning bass with Scott for over 6 years. My 2 sons started as beginners with him at Year 9.One son was learning bass as a second instrument and the other has taken it to a higher level playing in a professional band and also music papers at University. Scott is a very professional bass teacher. His lessons are always well prepared with good resource material. He makes sure the student is playing with correct technique and understands theory. Scott finds out what the individual student likes to play and provides pieces that suit and offers new ideas. He covers all kinds of genres at whatever level the student plays at. He is very easy to communicate with. He relates well to his students, listens to their needs and supports them to achieve their goals. Not only that but bass players enjoy learning with him.

I started lessons with Scott several years ago and have enjoyed every minute of it since. I had had no prior experience yet learned an immense amount in a very short space of time and had an enormous amount of fun doing it. Scott manages to blend theoretical and technical elements with real music so well that the entire lesson is always a lot of fun. I would really recommend him to anyone wanting to give playing bass a go, I know I've never looked back!

I started learning bass from Scot Sutherland in 2011. I had toured in the 80's as a keyboardist in a band, but wanted to start a fresh with a new instrument and focus. Scott was brilliant and probably more the one who had focus on making sure I achieved what I had set out to do. Scott's approach is to individualise his teaching system to get results with an emphasis on playing music. His teaching also ensures the necessary theory is attained so that the bassist understands how to improvise and understand the building blocks of playing with a group of musicians, rather than being a bedroom soloist. I believe that Scott's teaching method is effective and innovative and would highly recommend him to either beginning musicians or those more advanced. Keep up the good work Scott. Martin

I have been getting lessons from Scott for about 3 years now. His well organised lessons have been a real help in my bass playing so far and have given me good insight into the music world and what there is to learn. He is a very versatile player and teacher and really knows his stuff. I went to him to work on Jazz bass playing specifically. The lessons were indeed an invaluable help in my concepts and abilities, not just in Jazz music. I would very highly recommend him as a teacher to someone of any age and ability as he is the most versatile bass teacher I have had.

Ive been learning from Scott for about four years. He is by far the best bass teacher ive had. This is because he covers everything with a balance. He has shown me great bass lines from a range of genres, also letting me choose my lines from my favourite bands. In theory and technique scott has given me solid building blocks to work with as well as exploring the advanced after i progressed as a player. Also Scott is a really nice guy. Very professional, patient and enthusiastic and he always seems to explain everything perfectly. He has introduced me to some of my favourite bands and players from a range of genres. Highly recommended.

I've had bass guitar lessons from several different teachers over the years. Each has bought something different and valuable to the process. However, after 10 years of music and 20 years in the acoustics industry, Scott is by far the best bass guitar teacher I've ever had. If you want to have music and bass guitar in the rest of your life, and if you want to have a lot of fun getting them there, it's worth spending time with Scott.

I had been playing bass for 8 years before deciding to start lessons. Scott has been an awesome teacher, always very friendly and always interested in what I had to play. The teaching is structured and easy to follow as well as being very through. I would highly recommend Scott to anyone who seeks to further their bass playing at any experience level. Not only do we get to learn about the bass but we get to listen to some very cool and interesting music.

I had a great learning experience taking lessons from Scott. I had been playing bass for around 5 years and thought I had my technique somewhat together, turns out I didn't. Thanks to Scott and his thorough teaching methods i was shown the correct way to play the bass in order to be more efficient, create a better tone and have more control over the bass. I am grateful for that alone. He also introduced me to styles of music that I wouldn't have thought I would be into, but once I heard some of these lines these bass players were putting down I too became a fan. i would recommend him to anyone looking to improve their ability on the instrument. 10/10

I approached Scott as an experienced drummer craving a change of stage position! It is the structure of bass lessons which makes learning the bass so enjoyable. He gets a great balance between discussing and learning to understand music theory and sight-reading, physical bass-playing techniques, and learning cool bass-lines, which he hand-picks according to each individual's musical taste - which I found really impressive! What is clearly the most important thing to him is that his students enjoy learning the instrument - that way you want to practice, rather than having to force yourself to which I've often I've found myself doing when learning instruments. Unfortunately a relocation means I am no longer learning from Scott and I very much miss his lessons - I would strongly recommend him to anybody regardless of age, style or ability.

I started as a beginner with Scott, four years ago. He is equally as good at explaining the basics of bass playing as he is at extending an experienced bass player. He has a really nice manner and was always interested in my playing and progression. I have no hesitation in recommending Scott to anyone looking for a bass teacher.

After reading what other people have said; it's pritty obvious that Scott is an awsome bass teacher. His approach is straightforward and goal orientated which I found really worked for me. After being in a local pop-punk band that has been featured on Juice TV and C4; I came to Scott and discovered that there was so much more I could get out of my playing. He explains things really well, and after having music teachers for most of my life I found that his way of communicating has best suited me. He explained things in a simple way which made learning so much easier for me than is has been before. He's really inspired me to become a better bassist and it's great having a mentor to help guide me. He has supported my dreams for the future and my skill has improved tremendously after having lessons with him for the past year! Plus he's a cool guy. I seriously recommend him to you :)

I've been having bass lessons from Scott for the last 3 years. Scott has helped take me from non musician with no musical knowledge to now studying music at tertiary level. As previously stated lesson are always catered to my musical style whilst introducing new genres and styles. I have no hesitation recommending Scott to anyone looking to become a competent bassist

Its surprising even after years of being immersed in music and bands and jamming with other musicians what taking lessons will do for your thinking, approach and technique. All stuff that you never knew you were missing. Scott has not only helped in sorting out old habits that were placing limits on what I was achieving but also the study of music structure has opened windows up on my Bass guitar. I can thoroughly recommend taking these lessons. (Famous by Xmas….)

At the age of 29 I decided to have some bass lessons after playing for 3 years. I found Scott to be open, friendly and very patient. He tailoured his lessons to music that I enjoyed listening to and also managed to introduce me to other styles in a comfortable and easy going way. After my first lesson I felt more confident and relaxed with playing. I also found live performances less stressful as a result of the confidence I gained through Scott's teachings. I would recommend anyone of any age to visit Scott in order to improve their bass playing.

My son has had fortnightly bass lessons with Scott for 18 months. I am delighted with his professional, friendly and skilled approach as a bass teacher. Scott has extended my son within a supportive environment and lifted his bass playing to a very high standard. I appreciate Scott's clear, regular communication around lesson times and the follow up material he provides for further practice. Scott caters to my son's musical interests, while introducing him to a great variety of new material as well. Scott is an excellent role model for young musicians and it is wonderful to listen to my son speak so enthusiastically about his lessons and the things he has learned about bass playing and the background to songs. I fully recommend Scott as a bass teacher and value his commitment to developing skilled musicians.

I was with another teacher for about a year before I came to Scott and I was amazed at the difference. In a month with Scott I had improved more than I had in a year! He covers everything you will ever need to know about playing the bass, and is an excellent teacher. He selects music he knows I like and would want to learn, and I'm really enjoying the theory side of things as well. I highly recommend Scott to any Bass player, be they a beginner or an experienced musician. (age 12)

I would highly recommend Scott for anyone looking to improve their bass playing and musicianship. He is an excellent teacher and my playing ability and musical knowledge has improved vastly since I've started with Pro Bass Lessons. I have found Scott to be a very thorough and informative teacher, he focuses not only on playing technique but also arms you with the musical theory and knowledge to become a better player.

Hi, I've picked up the bass a mere 7 weeks ago. Started with the books and DVDs, a complete waste of time. I found Scott and been with him six weeks now. He's very encouraging, and a thoroughly nice person. I'm enjoying the music theory too! He had me playing tunes after the first lesson, that can only be a good thing. Highly recommended to all who wish to learn the bass.

I am an experienced gigging professional and have been playing bass for over 20 years. I felt that I had plateaued and needed to step up a level so I came to Scott for help. I can honestly say that Scott is the best bass teacher I have come across and I have had several through the years. He covers all the bases (pardon the pun) by addressing theory, reading, technique and a variety of examples of different styles. Other bass teachers often have a bias towards one or two of these important areas whereas Scott addresses all consistently and offers a well thought out and structured approach to meeting your own personal goals. My playing has continued to improve under Scott's instruction. I certainly highly recommend Scott, you won't be disappointed whether you are a beginner or a more experienced musician.
