Hachette is a subsidiary of Lagardere, a large media company in France.
Started by Louis Hachette, a Paris bookseller who published his first book in 1863, Hachette is now the largest book publisher in Britain and France, and the second largest in Spain.
With its purchase of Time Warner Book Group in 2006, Hachette also became a major player in U.S. publishing.
Hachette UK is now the largest publisher in the UK, comprising Hodder & Stoughton, Headline, Orion, Hachette Children's, Octopus, Chambers Harrap and Little, Brown.
Hachette NZ started as Hodder & Stoughton NZ Ltd before becoming Hodder Moa Beckett. It continues to publish New Zealand titles under the Hodder Moa imprint.
