13th May 2013 This is a very friendly cosmopolitan place in the heart of Ohakune. It has been run for decades by Carl and Maureen. The local farm, mill and skifield workers meet here for beer, whiskey and watching rugby, and the local farmers wives and professional women meet for coffee, wine and cake. In summer there are the trail-riding cyclists and in winter the snowboarders. And I have met an amazing variety of international visitors there.
There is mellow 1970s music, newspapers and Maureen's quirky signs to engage your attention, and the girls behind the counter are friendly, efficient and lovely.
The meals are on the high-calorie side; with the vegetable muffins my favourites snack, the fettuccine being my tasty low calorie choice of an evening meal, and the lamb shanks my special treat.
The information elsewhere on this page is inaccurate. It welcomes people with children and is a great place for them. And there is big sheltered smokers deck at the rear, with tv and heaters. There are about 15 staff, with 4 to 6 on duty most of the time.

20th August 2011 On Friday the 19th/08/2011 i had a wonderful coffee from the cafe lafare brand here served from some lovely girls who were very nice. I drink a $shot latte so I like my coffee strong, and the girls made it perfectly.
However on the Saturday because the coffee was so good on the friday i thought the food would be too. We had two eggs Benedict, both my partner and i had over cooked eggs.. and they had thinned out the hollendaise that much with water it was just runny all over the plate... the duty manager who i assume to be the owner mucked up my coffee order and forgot the caramel, that was fine because the coffee was burnt anyway, great he made me a new one but that was burnt also. You could smell it was burnt and taste it as well. When i quietly approached the guy with this half full bowl latte and told him he had burnt the coffee twice ( i am a trained barista) he had the ordasity to turn around and say to me in front of customers "no it's not!! what do you know about making coffee!!" I was appalled I replied with " i am a trained barista, I know what burnt coffee tastes like" he then shrugged me off... Disgusting I have worked in hospitality for many years and words can not describe how horrible he acted.. Ever heard of the customers always right.. Cafe lafare should not support this company as they are destroying the good coffee you produce and i have worked with for years. Disgusting, customers beside me were also complaining of their meals also, but the duty manager i dont care if you are busy only 5 months of the year get a life hospo is about putting a smile on your face and treating your customers well so they wana come back. My advice go to another cafe up the road it will probably have much better service, food and someone who can make a proper latte.

29th March 2010 We had the most amazing seafood chowder at this restaurant. I wish I knew the recipe. I have tried other seafood chowders and without a doubt this restaurant's chowder 'rocks'.
