This is the chance in life to carve your very own Taonga Hei Matau, the ori fishing hook in Jade, Paua or Bone.


You don't need carving experience to hand craft your delicate masterpiece. The use of professional tools and personal guidance will make any design come to life. This fulfilling workshop will take a day, the unique result will last a lifetime.


No experience is required, and it only takes a few hours to create your very own bone, paua shell or jade taonga (treasure) made from materials found in and around the Hokitika area.


Steve, a professional carver, will guide you through the carving process. He will help you with the entire process from beginning to end - cutting the basic shape, carving the details, and polishing the piece. Steve will give you use of all the professional tools he himself uses when carving his own pieces. Steve will give you all the help you need when creating your jade treasure, but he emphasizes an individual approach to each piece. He wants each person to find a design that speaks to their own tastes and is an expression of who they are. Just let Steve know you're coming, and head over to his Bonz 'n' Stonz studio in central Hokitika to begin your jade carving experience!
