Had the unfortunate experience of eating here last night 15.04.2015. The main restaurant was full but it was suggested we try their wine bar next door with the assurance it was the same menu. This we did and chose a table upstairs. Our order was taken quickly, however, it was almost an hour before any food arrived. I have to say we were extremely disappointed when the food did arrive. We thought the food less than average and definitely NOT WORTH THE WAIT. We were not the only table who had a long wait either last night either. When we commented about the wait on leaving we were told it was because the main restaurant was full! Sorry but in my opinion if they can only serve the main restaurant in a timely way, why have the extra tables. Had we known there was going to be a long wait for food we would have gone somewhere else. Mt Eden is after all full of restaurants. Would we go back - No. The wait and the quality of the food have well and truly put us off going there again and I wouldn't recommend it either. I think there is better food, better service and better value for money elsewhere.

I disagree with the review below. To me, Molten is a fantastic place for really special moments where you can pamper yourself with exquisite food and efficient service. Price range a bit high, yes, but you will have to agree when you taste their delicious food and the whole dining experience. Just amazing!!

Sadly we were disappointed. We had tried to get a table a few times last minute but never avail. Assuming popular means good I guess out expectations were high. Inattentive service and the food lacking. We've been spoiled w the likes of Merediths.

[I think that my other review was a little long - read the recommendations after - whoops] Were surprised to find the restaurant close to full during a Tuesday lunch hour - I suggest you make reservations. A beautiful courtyard out the back makes for a relaxed atmosphere. The menu spoils one for choice. The food is cooked with delicacy and passion and the flavours well complimented. Service, impeccable! Whilst pricey, there is little to fault unless of course it is not class one is after!

On route to the airport I was on the hunt for a restaurant that cooked and presented their food with delicacy and passion. My guest, an Australian cousin who has had the privilege of preparing food in many marked restaurants in Australia. To say I wanted to ensure that a lasting punch was left on his palate was an understatement! I am a proud Kiwi, through and through and I guess a little bit of the good old ANZAC rivalry came out as I was adamant to prove that the food fare on this side of the Tasman is something the world is competing with. Our steps lead us to Mt Eden's Molten Restaurant. Although it carries a solid reputation, I was a little surprised to find the restaurant close to full during a Tuesday lunch hour. Being confined to an office job, the Garden lounge made a pleasant setting in the Springs' sun and thankfully was a little more peaceful than the populated restaurant. Service was impeccable. There was no hesitation in the ability to meet our time restrictions from the moments we walked through the door. Every need was meet with meet with that sort of service that does not interrupt the meal or conversation. We enjoyed what was probably the most delicious bread (as "simple" an entree as it is), I have enjoyed in a restaurant, caramelised onions encased by freshly in-house baked bread ($8.50), whilst contemplating our decision over a lunch menu that spoilt us with choice. It was a far cry from plain. The main course was no let down either. Waikanae crab served with spinach and ricotta linguine with a pernod cream and crunchy shallots was plated before me ($30). My guest had selected the black truffle and mushroom stuffed chicken which was well complemented with creamed peal barley and pea pesto ($31.50). We left the selection of our wine to the waitress, who matched the Amour Bendal Reserve Chardonnay perfectly ($11 a glass). Being a chef himself and knowing a lot more about food than I, I was pleased to revel in the compliments my guest had for both the meals that were plated before us. Whilst we would have appreciated a more generous serving of the truffles in the chicken, there was little one could fault, unless of course it was not class that they were after. The ingredients of the individual meals perfectly complimented each other. The waikanae crab dish was rich and creamy and I would therefore recommend the small sized portion as the large is very generous. The chicken, a more delicate meal but incredibly satisfying with full well matched flavours. We were fortunate to have the opportunity to meet the Head Chef and owner of the restaurant. It is no surprise the quality of the food that was served given his "restaurant repertoire" which has taken him across the world and includes some of the most well known restaurants in London. With a plane soon departing, it was unfortunately time to walk out of the serenity of the garden lounge and head back into reality with no more than a glance at the desert menu. Having heard much praise in respect of Molton Restaurant, I now have no better verdict than my own to go on, as no one understands your individual palate better than yourself. Molten, I will see you very soon.

The squid is superb! And the honey/chilli sauce is just amazing. Beautifully cooked and presented. In fact all the dishes are. We would eat here every weekend if we could.

Had dinner at Molten recently, surprisingly got in last minute on a Monday night - every other night it is packed. The food is divine, service was great. Highly recommend the crab and the squid from The Untouchables selection. The Entrees / Untouchables are ample in size so nearly didn't make it through the lovely main meal! Has a great little courtyard out the back for a drink if you'd like some outside space.
